My Go-To Serum Routine
My ultimate guide to getting the most out of your SkinCycles routine
One of the most common questions I get asked is “How do you layer serums?” Or “Which one is first?” Which, is such an important one, because how you apply your skincare can makes just as much of a difference as the products themselves.
Layering your serums properly allows each formula to perform at its best, improves absorption, and helps you achieve healthy, radiant skin without overwhelming it. My approach is always simple, effective, and skin-first.
Here’s exactly how I layer my SkinCycles serums, and why each step matters.
The Golden Rule of Layering
Always start from lightest to heaviest (or richest) serum, water-based to active treatments. This ensures every serum can absorb properly to deliver maximum benefits.
Morning Routine: Protect, Brighten & Hydrate
Step 1: Brighten
I always start my morning routine with Luminesce-C Serum. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that protects the skin from daily environmental stressors while boosting radiance.
Why first:
- Lightweight and fast-absorbing
- Helps neutralise free radicals
- Brightens and evens skin tone
- Supports collagen production
Step 2: Hydrate
Next, I apply 5D HA Serum to deeply hydrate and plump the skin. With five molecular weights of hyaluronic acid, it hydrates multiple layers of the skin for long-lasting comfort and bounce.
How to apply:
I always apply this to slightly damp skin. Either straight after cleansing, apply a few drops to the damp skin or after lightly misting the face. This helps the hyaluronic acid to draw moisture into the skin more effectively.
Why second:
- Attracts and binds moisture
- Enhances absorption of previous serums
- Smooths fine lines
- Leaves skin plump, dewy, and comfortable
Finish with: Moisturiser + Lumina Shield SPF
I always seal everything in with a moisturiser, followed by Lumina Shield SPF. Even in winter or on cloudy days, SPF is non-negotiable.
Evening Routine: Clarify, Renew & Repair
Step 1: Clarify
In the evening, as this is the thinnest serum, I start with a few drops of Clarify Complexion. This helps to rebalance and refine the skin after the day. This I alternate on the days I don’t use retinol.
Why first:
- Helps regulate oil and congestion
- Refines pores and texture
- Calms inflammation
- Prepares the skin for active treatments
Step 2: Renewal
Next comes Retinol Youth Serum, my go-to for long-term skin renewal. It’s effective yet designed to be gentle when used correctly.
How I introduce it:
If you’re new to retinol, start by using it every other evening to allow your skin to build tolerance. Once your skin feels comfortable, you can gradually work up to nightly use.
Why second:
- Encourages healthy cell turnover
- Smooths texture and fine lines
- Improves tone and clarity
- Supports long-term skin health
I always apply retinol to clean, dry skin and allow it to absorb fully before layering anything else on top.
Step 3: Hydration
On alternate evenings, instead of retinol, I use 5D HA Serum to deeply hydrate, replenish moisture, and support the skin barrier. On retinol nights, I apply retinol on its own to allow for optimal absorption and maximum effectiveness.
Why I alternate:
- Maintains deep hydration without compromising retinol absorption
- Supports the skin barrier on non-retinol nights
- Reduces dryness and sensitivity
- Keeps skin calm, plump, and balanced
Finish with: Moisturiser or Overnight Treatment
Lock everything in with a nourishing moisturiser, such as Bio-Balance or, when my skin needs a little extra love, an overnight treatment such as the ExoYouth Sleep Mask.
My Final Tips for Serum Layering
- A few drops of each serum is all you need
- Allow 30 - 60 seconds between layers
- Always wear SPF in the morning when using retinol at night
- Keep it simple and consistent
